After finishing my first novel, Recycled Lives, in 2013, ideas for Quirky Tales began to materialise, bringing me so much pleasure and enjoyment. So it wasn’t long before 71/2 and 81/2 Quirky Tales were ready, quickly followed by 91/2. Since its first publication in 2018, all have undergone rebranding and re-editing, with several stories added. Long stories that continued from book to book have been removed and reworked with stories completed as stand-alone entertainment. Quirky Short Stories started life as amusing short Tales. But oddly, these musings took on a life of their own, driven by the characters and my need to know what was going to happen to them— because I had no idea at the time I started writing. Due to the issues and predicaments some characters had to battle through, as well as their endearing qualities. It was decided these runaway tales should be corralled into separate books.

The Coin & Lost Boy: In my early years, I lived in a tiny village, way out in the country, where the few local kids got together to make their own entertainment— learning to ride bikes, climbing trees, and, after chapel on a Sunday, damming up the local stream. Arnie and his gang were from that mould, bonding them the same as our group, but sadly, they lost a gang member. Sid vanished without a trace while they played among the old ruins of their local abbey.
His disappearance devastated his family, gang and local community, who turned out en masse to help search for the little chap― he was never found or forgotten by his mates. Fifteen years after that tragic event, the gang were drawn together by a wedding, which coincided with the anniversary of Sid’s disappearance. So late one evening, they revisited the abbey ruins to remember Sid, and what transpired was mind-blowing.

Twisted Minds: Adopted as a newborn by a childless couple who named him Hugo, after his stepmother’s favourite poet, Victor Hugo. Maybe hoping the child would lean towards the arts, but that was not to be. At the age of four, he strangled his pet hamster by hanging it. Managed to tether a bird to their cat’s tail, earning him several sessions with a child psychiatrist, who advised electric stimulus to correct the boy’s deep, sadistic nature, but his mother wouldn’t allow it. Hugo revelled in killing anything where prolonged suffering was involved. Boarding school offered opportunities to sample all manner of twisted treats, amplified further by meeting someone his age and tuned to his wavelength. Kasandra Rodrigues was sly, devious and calculating. She planned to dispose of her older brother to inherit her father’s vast industrial empire. The DeVilliers / Rodrigues mix sets in motion a tale that can only end badly―
